Being Thankful for Less!

The majority of Americans always want more…more of everything! Perhaps having less, WANTING less, and playing more simply is what we really *need*?

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah," said the son.

"So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered:

"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added,

"Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Homeschooler in college

That's what I have. My daugther Destin is going to UAB on a four year scholarship.

She is also in a new honors program called Experiential Learning. She says it's largely self directed but with a different oversight. Instead of a parent and a cover school you have professors, advisers and committees.

Now I hated college. Happily she loves it. She got three A's and three B's her first semester. This semester looks a lot busier. I mean it seems like they have exponentially made it more difficult… Continue

Hi Guys & Roll Tide!!!

We had a great week last week and tried to mostly get back into the swing of things. The kids returned to ballroom dancing and Yoshukai classes. Dae and I started a timeline book starting with American History Leif Erikson and will be working our way to present day over the next few weeks. Dalton has started an in depth study of the Crusades. He has studied the Crusades before, but his interest has really gotten piqued by a PlayStation 3 game he has been playing, so h… Continue

I am so excited about Christmas this year! Can you tell? I bought everyone's presents last year the day after Christmas (except my kids), so we are going to concentrate on making a few things, probably do some baking, listening to LOTS of Christmas music, watch some "oldies but goodies", and just enjoy the season. We put up the tree tonight and will be decorating the rest of the house this week.

I hope I see all of you at the Everest Academy Christmas party on Tuesday. We are going to be swimmi… Continue

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Thanksgiving. We had a houseful of folks to come to our house. Dae made cinnamon pretzels out of canned biscuits, cinnamon, and sugar. They were really good! So good, in fact, that Dalton ate them all and had to suffer the wrath of Dae.

Thanksgiving morning we had a wonderful surprise. Our Kitty Mama had her second litter of kitties, only one kitty again. It is SO cute. She is so funny about this kitty. She brings it to me at night to keep. If I put it back… Continue

Thanks so much to everyone for all of your "get well" wishes. I am feeling some better. The exhaustion is not quite as bad. The main problem is very swollen and painful lymph nodes. The upside is that the kids are becoming very self sufficient. Hmmm...self sufficient is not really the right phrase. They are becoming very conscious of being helpful to the household. Speaking to several of you who have had mononucleosis, I am hopeful that this yucky adventure is soon to come to an end, and I will… Continue

I hope everyone is having a great week! Are you getting geared up for Thanksgiving? Dae has already started perusing the cook books to see what she is going to prepare. Every year she prepares two or three specialty dishes on her own. the last couple of years she has gotten her recipes from one of the "American Girl" cook books, but this year I think she is leaning toward something different. I will let you know what she decides.

Dalton is working on learning his guitar chords. He said he is go… Continue

Well last week consisted of a LOT of learning. My kids learned what a whiny mom they have. They learned how to scavenge for food. They learned how to wait on me hand and foot. They learned how to do ALL of the house-hold chores. They basically learned how to take care of a sick mom. They actually did a really good job. They made me lots of garlic tea, hot/cold compresses, and tomato soup. I am feeling some better...not 100% better yet. I will tell you, I do not like "down time" AT ALL. I am read… Continue

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween, no matter what your take on it is. We didn't get to do several of the things we normally do as I started feeling bad on Thursday. In fact, this is the first time in my children's entire lives that I did not spend Halloween with them. Thank goodness for friends and my hubby. Thanks you guys. I spent the entire day and night in the bed, but the kids went to a friend's house and played, bonfire, supper, trick-or-treating, hayride, Ninja tag, etc. I he… Continue

I would like to wish you all a happy and safe Halloween this weekend. How do you celebrate your Halloween? I know some folks don't recognize Halloween at all, others feel it is anti-religious, and others go the other direction and go all out. You will have a chance to voice your opinion on this in the blog challenge this week.
